Today i went to the Middlesex open day down in London. it was a REALLY long drive but definitely worth it. Middlesx was probably the first uni i thought about going too after a trip to Manchester in first year to a university fair thing. At the time i wasn't sure what i wanted to do yet but had taken an interest to advertising after we did the irn bru project. I spoke to the lady on the Middlesex stall who had just graduated and done the advertising degree for ages about the course and what it entailed. I thought it sounded amazing and it stuck with me for ages. when it came to second year and we were preparing our UCAS etc I looked back at Middlesex and decided it was somewhere I wanted to go. weirdly, a couple of weeks before the open day, I spoke to another person from the university at the industry employers fair at Aesthetica and this just got me more excited.
When we arrived the campus was strange, the uni looked quite old and almost like a little village on the outskirts of London. Everyone was so lovely, the whole university felt like a community and it was so diverse, it was a wonderful environment. We went to the opening talk and i felt so positive. The uni was very relaxed and they focused on the students well being and quality of teaching and it felt like there was much less pressure compared to Manchester Met. I loved the uni and the arts block was INSANE it was like it own bubble of happiness and creativity and i could see myself working there. and despite it being its own block, it didn't feel like it was excluded because everyone was so friendly and laid back
- it felt comfortable and safe.
When I went to my course talk, it was in a small room with a small group of people from all over the world which was exciting. The course leader was a Canadian woman who was really bubbly. She had loads of industry experience and the course modules were so interesting and varied. The course was super creative and easy going and all about sharing ideas. I thought the course sounded fab and would love to do it in the future.
Despite the uni itself being an all-rounder, the cons of living just outside London definitely outweighed the benefits. The area surrounding the uni was run down, nothing much there. The living costs were unbelievable for really scruffy horrible accommodation which they recommended you didn't use! The idea of renting private property on my own where I don't know anyone wasn't very comforting and i wasn't feeling to confident about the living situation and obviously commuting would be just as expensive so the location really wasn't practical and definitely put me off.
